Having an independent interview is very cheap compared to the costs of a wrong hire. It eliminates the risks of poorly skilled or 'good talkers' draining resources through agency fees and contractual liabilities. On the positive side, we can pick out the highly skilled, so that even if the CV doesn't say Sybase, you won't miss a much better top-notch SQL Server candidate who could do the job required.
